Get In w/ Baby Bash

So we recently were given an opportunity for a phone interview with rap star Baby Bash, whose new album, Cyclone, is set to be released officially October 30th.  You might know him from such hit songs as "Suga Suga" featuring Frankie J, "Baby I'm Back" with Akon, and most recently hit hit single "Cyclone" featuring T-Pain with producer Lil' Jon.  On Friday, October 5th we got a phone call from Bash, and this is what transpired.

Hey what’s up Bash, how you doing man?

What’s going on big dawg; just chilling man, getting ready for work getting ready for work.

I gotcha, I gotcha, where you located at right now, where you hanging out?

Right now I’m in The N.Y.C., I just did a segment yesterday for MTV Sucka Free Latino, so, did a little segment, came out to New York, ate some good food, about to go to Connecticut, and do a show at the University of Connecticut tonight.

Hell yeah, sound like a plan, your new album Cyclone, there’s been  some confusion when it’s coming out, what’s the official release date on that.

Right. It’s the 30th, its official like a referee whistle, October 30th

Alright so no doubt about it, we can put it in the books right now?

Its official like a referee whistle man, for real put it in the books, it’s in there, getting pressed up right as we speak.

Awesome.  What was the vibe like recording your lead single with producer Lil' Jon and guest appearance with T-Pain, how did that go down, how was the vibe?

You know, it was a great vibe, I actually had met Lil' Jon about a year and a half ago backstage at a concert, and he’s totally down to earth dude, totally down to earth guy, was like hey Bash What’s up, good to meet you” and I was honored to meet him.  And he was like I like your style, your style is kinda melodic, and I got these beats, and I think your melodic flow will kinda be, you know, you know, his beats are usually chant, you know people like to chant together and scream on his beats.  And he was like why don’t you try to put some of that fly stuff on my beat.

Definitely...

He sent me some tracks, I got in the studio, and I was working at the Hit Factory in Miami, and T-Pain was working at the Hit Factory to in another studio, I met T-pain, talked it up with him, and he was like, he actually had liked a song I did with Akon a couple years ago I did called “Baby I’m Back.”  And he’s like I love that song, and he heard the song Cyclone and was like I need to get on it. He jumped on it, he’s an awful down to earth dude, and that’s what I work with, I work with down to earth people. And he ripped it up, their both musical geniuses. I couldn’t ask for a better situation and it turned out real great. Actually, since I’m not really know for my club bangers you know what I mean, so I’m finna do a club banger. I’m more known for being in the mood, playa playa, convertible drop tops, hanging out with your girl type song you know what I mean. I also got that classic Bash on the album to, so I went ahead and stepped it up and put a did a couple of club bangers on this next album to, so, it turned out great.

That’s where it’s at, any other producers or any other guest appearances you want to speak about, or any other hit singles?

Yea, one of my favorite rappers, I got my boy Pimp C from UGK, we did a crazy song together. Production by Jim Johnson, JR Rodhem, Happy Perez, I got a song with, my next single, with Sean Kingston, Sean Kingston ripped it up, I like the island flavor you know, I like to put that island flavor on my song, it ripped it up. Mr. Babs, Paula Deanda, Aundrea from Danity Kane, my boy Ryan Ketter from 1 republic, so you know I got a well rounded album. I got something for everybody; what ever mood you’re in I got something for you. If your in a happy mood, or crunk mood, or love making mood, or, you know a conscience mood I got something for you on the album man, October 30th.

So we hear your working with J-Lo and Santana as well, how’d that come about?

Man that’s crazy bro, that was crazy. Well Santana is on my record label, we’re both on the same label. And, I got a call, hey you know, Santana wants you to get on this record, and I was like, oh Santana. I didn’t even think he knew who the hell I was you know?

Exactly...

It feels good when someone like that, you know, I’m not the most popular guy out there, like I said I’m not trying to be the best rapper, or the biggest rapper out there. I consider myself more of a songwriter then anything, and for one of my peers, especially for a legend like Carlos Santana, well all my peers from Akon, to T-Pain, to Lil’ Jon, for all them people, who are musical geniuses in their own right, for them to understand what I’m doing, and  like my style, is like, its worth it all. Even though some time it’s a struggle, you get the politics, as far as the music world to really understand what I’m doing, you know, it feels good to have someone like that to let me to get down on their album. Then you throw J-Lo in the mix, man, it’s J-lo’s in the mix, it’s hilarious. It’s like, the song is hot to, the song is dope as hell, so, that’s probably one of my biggest achievements, working with Carlos Santana and J-Lo. I know I have a gold album, and I’ve had top 5 songs, but shoot, just working with J-Lo and Santana on a song, it’s like, a big achievement for me, and I count my blessing.

Makes you take a step back, and take a second to look back at where you’ve been huh?

Its crazy bro, exactly, sometimes I just, I wake up in the morning, and think sometimes, damn, this is what happened.

So many artists hate playing their first major hit song because of how much it blew up, do you hate performing “Suga Suga” now a days, or is it, is it something you still like to play out?

Oh I love it; if I hear it on the radio to this day I still make everyone be quiet, let me hear it on the radio. I’m just a humble dude, to me I still get that feeling, cause I never expected to get this far, I never, never took it like I’m a big star, I’ma blow up. I never thought of that, I would of wished it, hoped it, but never expected it so, so to this day, when ever I hear “Suga Suga” or “Baby I’m Back,” I still turn it up like it’s the first time I heard it on the radio, I still get that little excitement, that’s what keeps me going.

That’s what it’s about. I mean talking about your past you know, looking back at 2003 when you signed to Universal, and now being on board with Clive Davis with Arista and J-Records, you know, where, how have you progressed in your mind, I mean what do you look back on and remember the most, and what do you look forward to the most in your future?

Getting with Clive Davis, it really doesn’t get much better then that in music. Whether it be hip-hop, pop, rock, or anything. So, that is unquestionably like, for Clive Davis to even know who I am is crazy. I mean, I remember when I first got hooked up with the deal in 2003; I was willing to sign anything, know what I’m saying? Like if they want to give me 10 bucks to do the album, I was like ok what ever, you know, I was a happy a go lucky kid, or happy go lucky trying, to do anything. I was willing to do anything for 10 bucks, 50 bucks you know, just to do music. Uh, I have more to write about now; I’ve learned more about the other side of the music industry you know, the crazy, crazy politics of the music industry and the people who are in it. And I’ve learned a lot about that, I think that’s kinda, ya know kind of, rounded me off, as far as, you know, knowing who to trust, and knowing who to be around. Knowing how to write my music, and how to perform it. When I first did my first album in 2003, I just, I was rushing songs, I was just doing straight rap songs, and start rapping on anything. Now I’m more into the hooks and the beat sections, and the chorus line, and the music, and the creativity of the whole song, and the whole body of the song, and I think, you know, Clive Davis kind of helped me with that. Cause Clive is, Clive is one of the CEO’s in this music industry who is about the song, he’s not about numbers or trends or follow the trends. He’s about the actual song, and I think he taught me about the whole body of the song, not just the rap, and I think that helped me out you know.

You got anything going on for the road, you plan on doing touring at all after the CD release, hitting up the towns, what’s going on with that?

Yea, yea, well it’s kinda weird, cause it kind of seem like I’ve been on the road for 5 years straight to tell you the truth. Even though you’re not really touring, but it seems like we always got gigs. But I know that Pit Bull’s people are calling me, they want to hook up a little tour with Baby Bash and Pit Bull, and get something started, get a little tour going. Me and him, Paula Deanda, so, that might be coming in the future. I mean I got all kind of shows coming up in the next few months, I’m kinda stuck, but I’ll be everywhere. I mean I’m always on the road, I love being on the road. I got all kind of stuff coming, I got a movie I’m getting ready to shoot with Chingo Bling which is going to be hilarious. It’s going to be like part Friday, part Half Baked, start shooting at the end of the year. So yea I got a lot of stuff going on, I got a group coming out called the Stewey Brother. The Stewie Brothers are going to be the new Beastie Boys mixed with the Three Stooges. Know what I mean, so it’s gonna be tight man, gonna be tight.

It’s gonna be wild, gonna be wild. Well that’s all we got for you man, we appreciate everything, you know, sitting down to take the time with us and what not. Is there anything you want to let your fans know before we let you go?

Just take care of your self, take care of your family, stay safe, stay fly. Check out myspace.com/babybash. That’s really me on there, it ain’t, I got no one out there typing for me on there, it’s really your boy on myspace, so if I hit you back it’s really me.
