Interview w/ Jeff from ABM
So I recently got the chance to sit down and catch up with Jeff, guitarist for Tampa area band, A Broken Machine, and ask a few quesitons for you, the fans of this up and coming metal band.

The band has been together roughly about three (four) years, correct? Tell me about how it all got started? Yea. About 4 years. The band formed after a change in vocalist. When that happened almost every aspect of the band changed and that’s when the name A Broken Machine came. How has the band evolved since then? There have been several member changes since then. Since then we got a new bass player (Bobby), a new drummer (Larry) and I was asked to stay on after the loss of a guitar player. With all these member changes the sound has gotten a lot more destructive. |

I have heard your music as being referred to as “death metal”. Do you agree or disagree with this term? How would you classify your style of music? I disagree. I would call us Progressive Metal-Core. What are you influences, both musically and non musically? Musically I would say I have a lot of influences. Ranging form individuals such as Slash from Guns and Roses to Dimebag Darrel from Pantera. Bands such as As I Lay Dying, Through the Eyes of the Dead, The Absence, and Cold. Non-musically I would say whiskey and beer and all the emotions that come with everyday life. Also anyone who listens to A Broken Machine is an influence in my playing. When is comes to creating new music, is there one main songwriter, or more of a group effort? What is your formula? With us it’s a group effort all the way. We have went as far as putting names in a hat to see who gets to come up with the next part in the song. You can hear this method in our songs Revolution and Destroy What Replaced You |

You’ve been currently recording a new EP, Choke on ‘Em. What can fans expect from this album? How does the sound differ from your previous album? Choke on Em is a lot different from our first album. For one there are different people writing so the style has changed in a noticeable way. Choke on Em is a lot heavier. There is still melody but it comes in a completely different way. Has recording at Red Room Studios been beneficial, especially knowing they have recorded such bands as Obituary, Genitorturers, and many others? To me recording at Red Room was awesome. Our sound engineer Mark Prator was great. He was very easy to work with and made us very comfortable. So yes because we where able to just let the music take control and put out the best recording possible. When is the anticipated release for the cd? We aren’t really sure right now. We want to get it out to our fans as soon as possible. We will keep everyone posted through our Myspace. |
It is unprecedented the band has a remarkable stage presence, all members getting into the songs. Which song do you enjoy playing the most live? Which one brings the most energy from crowd?
I would have to say I have 2 favorite songs to play live, End Of Joy and Masquerade.
We probably get the biggest crowd response from Sleeping with the Enemy. From the first time we played to now. The crowd seems to really enjoy it. At least that is how it seems when I’m on stage.

If you could create your ideal concert, what national bands would you choose to tour with? Lets see maybe Third Eye Blind and Eve 6… um… F@#! that!!! Through the Eyes of the Dead, The Absence, All that Remains, and us A Broken Machine. That would be one brutal show What has been your most memorable show? July 29th 06 we played a show at Rockafellas in Bradenton, FL. After a month of filling in for A Broken Machine after they lost their guitarist they asked me to stay as a full time member while we were playing our set that night. Aside from the show on Oct. 26th at The Uptown Bar in Downtown St. Pete, are there any other upcoming shows? Feb 28th of 08 we are doing Freak Fest at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey, FL. But keep your eye on our MySpace because we might have something huge around Halloween |
In order from left to right Jeff - Guitar, Brett - Guitar, Bobby - Bass |
In closing, is there anything else you wish to share with your fans that look up to you for not only entertainment but as well inspiration?
To all of our fans and anyone who comes out to our show, you are what drive me to play. I hope you enjoy our new EP Choke on Em out soon.
